Sayyiduna al-Ash'ath bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A dispute arose between Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) and a man, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ruled that one of the two should take the oath. The other said: "O Messenger of Allah, you are letting him swear, and he will take it away!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If he swears falsely" (the narrator said:) and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said severe words about it. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: There is a hadith from this Companion in the Sahih, which is different from this one.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Muhammad bin Sallam al-Manbiji, about whom it is said in his biography that he has strange (gharib) narrations; the rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
