Sayyiduna Adi bin Umayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A man from Kindah named Imru' al-Qays bin Abis brought a case before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) against a man from Hadramawt. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ruled that the Hadrami had to provide proof, but he had no proof, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ruled that Imru' al-Qays should take the oath. The Hadrami said: "O Messenger of Allah, if you allow him to take the oath, then by Allah (the narrator is unsure whether he said:) by the Lord of the Ka'bah, my land is gone!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever swears a false oath in order to seize someone's wealth by it, when he appears before Allah Almighty, Allah Almighty will be angry with him." The narrator Raja' said: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their oaths for a small price." Imru' al-Qays said: "O Messenger of Allah, what reward will there be for one who gives it up?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Paradise." He said: "Then I call you to witness that I have given up all of the land to him."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it, and the narrators of both are thiqat (trustworthy).
