Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik al-Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We took part in a campaign with Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him), and with us were Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him). We were afflicted with severe hunger. I found some people who intended to slaughter a camel. I said: "I will help you with it and slaughter (nahr) it for you, and you give me some (meat) from it." They said: "Very well." I did so. This was mentioned to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: "You have hastened to take your reward; I will not eat it." Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) said something similar. Then they came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me he said: "Is this the man of the camel?"
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Rabi'ah bin al-Haram, and I have not found anyone who has written his biography; the rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
