Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man put on a garment (hullah) like the garment of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then came to a household (or neighbourhood) of Madinah and said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has instructed me that I may enter whichever house I wish." Those people said: "What we have known of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is that he does not command anything indecent." Then one of them said: "Arrange for him to stay, and send a messenger to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." When they informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): "Both of you go to him! If you find him alive, kill him and then burn him with fire; and if you find him (dead), then you have been spared the trouble regarding him. And my expectation about you both is only that you will have been spared the trouble regarding him. Then burn him with fire." These two set out towards that man, and they found that he had gone out at night to urinate, a snake had bitten him, and he had died. So the two of them burned him with fire. Then they both returned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him (peace and blessings be upon him) of the situation. The Prophet said: "Whoever deliberately attributes a lie to me, let him prepare to take his particular seat in Hell."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, who suffered from confusion (ikhtilat) in his memory. Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) and Imam al-Tirmidhi recorded only these words of this narration: "Whoever attributes a lie to me" to the end of the hadith.
