Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 598

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: In the early part of this Ummah the young hear (that is, acquire knowledge) from the elders, and in the latter part of this Ummah the elders will hear from the young. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) was asked: "What will be the reason for that?" He replied: "Because the young will have heard, and the elders will not have heard."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains al-Nadr Abu Umar, who is matruk (abandoned).
