Sayyiduna Kahmas al-Hilali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and stayed with him, then I left him. After a year I came to him again and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Do you recognise me?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." I said: "I am the man who stayed with you a year ago." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why has your appearance changed?" He replied: "Since I parted from you I have not eaten any food." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who ordered you to torment yourself? Fast one day each month." I said: "Allow me more." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) allowed me more, until he said: "Fast three days each month."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains Hammad bin Yazid al-Minqari, and I have not found anyone who has given his biography.
