Sayyiduna Sahl bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: My mother has passed away; she was not able to make any bequest, nor was she able to give charity. If I give charity on her behalf, will it be accepted? Will it benefit her? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! Even if (you give in charity) a burnt trotter (of a goat, she will receive its reward). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Imam Abu Dawud recorded a hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), but it is different from this hadith.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin Kurayb, and he is da'if (weak).
