Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 446

Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "When morning comes, Iblis sends out his troops and says: Whoever leads a Muslim most astray today, I will place a crown on him. When they return, one of them says: I stayed with a man constantly until he divorced his wife. Iblis says: Perhaps he will marry again. One of the troops comes and says: I stayed with a man constantly until he disobeyed his parents. Iblis says: Perhaps he will begin to treat them kindly. One of the troops comes and says: I stayed with a man constantly until he committed shirk (associated partners with Allah). Iblis says: You are the one, you are the one! (That is, you are the one who deserves that I place the crown on you.)"
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, who suffered from confusion (ikhtilat) in his memory; its remaining narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
