Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 4105

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah, whenever one of us was close to death we would inform the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would come to him before he died. He would stay with him, pray for his forgiveness, and wait for his death. The narrator says: Sometimes he had to stay for a long while, and this was hard on him. The narrator says: We decided: It is more considerate to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that we do not inform him about a dying person until he has died. The narrator says: So when someone died, we would inform him about it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would come to the family, pray for the person's forgiveness and pray for mercy upon him. Then, if he thought it fitting to attend the funeral, he would wait for it, and if he thought it fitting to leave, he would leave. The narrator says: We continued like that for another period. The narrator says: We said: It is more considerate to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that we carry our deceased to the house of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and not make him go out or trouble him. The narrator says: So we did that, and the matter remained so.
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
