Abu Zilal al-Qasmali narrates that he came to Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him: "O Abu Zilal, when did your sight go?" He replied: "I do not remember." Sayyiduna Anas said: "Shall I not tell you a hadith which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated to us from Sayyiduna Jibril, from his Lord? He told us that the Lord said: 'O Jibril, the reward of My servant whose sight I have taken away is nothing other than looking at My Face and dwelling near Me in My Abode.'"
The narrator says: And I saw the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who were around him begin to weep, wishing that their sight would go (so that they would attain this reward).
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Ashras bin al-Rabi', and I have not found anyone who mentions him. The narrator Abu Zilal was declared da'if (weak) by Abu Dawud, al-Nasa'i and Ibn Adi, while Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah (trustworthy).
