Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 3735

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a servant's sins become many and he has nothing that can wipe them out, Allah Almighty afflicts him with the trial of grief so that it becomes an expiation for his sins."
Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Layth bin Abi Sulaym, and he is a mudallis (one who obscures his sources). The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: A hadith will come later in the chapter on buying and selling, if Allah wills, in which it is mentioned that among sins there are some sins for which nothing can be an expiation except a man's anxiety in seeking his livelihood.
