وَبِسَنَدِهِ عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَيُجَرِّبُ أَحَدَكُمْ بِالْبَلَاءِ كَمَا يُجَرِّبُ أَحَدُكُمْ ذَهَبَهُ بِالنَّارِ فَمِنْهُ مَا يَخْرُجُ كَالذَّهَبِ الْإِبْرِيزِ فَذَاكَ حَمَاهُ اللَّهُ مِنَ الشُّبُهَاتِ ، وَمِنْهُ مَا يَخْرُجُ دُونَ ذَلِكَ فَذَلِكَ الَّذِي يَشُكُّ بَعْضَ الشَّكِّ ، وَمِنْهُ مَا يَخْرُجُ كَالذَّهَبِ الْأَسْوَدِ فَذَاكَ الَّذِي افْتُتِنَ " .
With the same chain, this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Allah Almighty tests one of you through trial just as one of you tests his gold through fire. Some of it comes out like pure gold; that is the person whom Allah Almighty has protected from doubts. Some of it comes out lesser than that; that is the person who falls into some doubt. And some of it comes out like black gold; that is the person who has fallen into fitnah (temptation)."
