Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me and to Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) and woke us for the prayer. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to his house and kept praying for part of the night, but he heard no sound from us, so he came back to us, woke us and said: "Both of you get up and pray!" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I sat up rubbing my eyes, and I was saying: "By Allah! Indeed, we will pray only what Allah Almighty has written in our destiny, for our souls are in the Hand of Allah Almighty; when He wishes to raise us again, He raises (that is, wakes) us." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was striking his hand on his thigh and saying: "We will pray only what is written in our destiny, we will pray only what is written in our destiny. 'Indeed, man is the most argumentative of things.'"
