Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 2717

It is reported about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he performed the Fajr prayer in one of the mosques of Banu Asad. Their imam, leading them in prayer, recited the two longest surahs of the Mufassal according to the arrangement of Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him). When he completed the prayer, Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I see that you are a young man; you can recite these two surahs in this prayer only while you are young."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator, Ata' bin al-Sa'ib; he is thiqah (trustworthy), but he suffered from confusion (ikhtilat) in the last part of his life.
