Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 2157

Sayyiduna Bilal the Mu'adhdhin (may Allah be pleased with him) states: On a cold night I called the adhan, and no one came. Then I called again, and again no one came; this happened three times. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is the matter with the people?" I said: "Because of the cold they have not been able to come." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated: "O Allah! Hold back the cold from them." Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I bear witness that I saw them fanning themselves at the morning prayer because of the heat.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Ayyub bin Sayyar, and he is matruk (abandoned).
