Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Sayyiduna Jibril: "Which part of the earth is best?" He replied: "I do not know." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ask your Lord about it." The narrator says: Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) wept and said: "O Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), is it for us to ask Him? He tells us whatever He wills." Then he went up to the sky, then came back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him: "The best part of the earth is the houses of Allah on the earth." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Which part of the earth is the worst?" He went up to the sky again, then came back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him: "The worst part of the earth is the markets."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Ubayd bin Waqid al-Qaysi, who is da'if (weak).
