Sayyiduna Abu Usayd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Makkah, Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him and submitted: "O Messenger of Allah, permit me to give the call to prayer (adhan)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Give the adhan." Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) used to give the adhan, and when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went back, Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) stayed behind.
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, al-Waqidi, who is da'if (weak). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) which Imam al-Tirmidhi recorded will come later in the chapter on the caliphate, if Allah wills.
