وَعَنْ ثَوْبَانَ : أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - عَظَّمَ شَأْنَ الْمَسْأَلَةِ فَقَالَ : " إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ جَاءَ أَهْلُ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ يَحْمِلُونَ أَوْثَانَهُمْ عَلَى ظُهُورِهِمْ ، فَيَسْأَلُهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ - تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى - فَيَقُولُونَ : رَبَّنَا ، لَمْ تُرْسِلْ لَنَا رَسُولًا ، وَلَمْ يَأْتِنَا لَكَ أَمْرٌ ، وَلَوْ أَرْسَلْتَ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولًا ، لَكُنَّا أَطْوَعَ عِبَادِكَ ، فَيَقُولُ لَهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ : أَرَأَيْتُمْ إِنْ أَمَرْتُكُمْ بِأَمْرٍ أَتُطِيعُونِي ؟ فَيَأْخُذُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ مَوَاثِيقَهُمْ . فَيَقُولُ : اعْمِدُوا لَهَا فَادْخُلُوهَا ، فَيَنْطَلِقُونَ حَتَّى إِذَا رَأَوْهَا فَرِقُوا فَرَجَعُوا . قَالُوا : رَبَّنَا ، فَرِقْنَا مِنْهَا لَا نَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ نَدْخُلَهَا ، فَيَقُولُ : ادْخُلُوهَا دَاخِرِينَ " . فَقَالَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " لَوْ دَخَلُوهَا أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ كَانَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ بَرْدًا وَسَلَامًا " . رَوَاهُ الْبَزَّارُ بِإِسْنَادَيْنِ ضَعِيفَيْنِ . وَقَدْ تَقَدَّمَتْ أَحَادِيثُ فِي كِتَابِ الْقَدَرِ فِيمَنْ مَاتَ فِي الْفَتْرَةِ .
Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), expressing the gravity of the matter of the questioning (that is, the reckoning), said: "When it is the Day of Resurrection, the people of the Time of Ignorance will come carrying their idols on their backs. Their Lord will question them, and they will reply: 'O our Lord, You did not send any Messenger to us, and no command of Yours came to us. Had You sent a Messenger to us, we would have been the most obedient of Your servants.' The Lord will say to them: 'What do you think: if I give you a command, will you obey Me?' Then the Lord will take firm covenants from them regarding this. Then He will say: 'Go towards it (that is, Hell) and enter it.' Those people will set off, until, when they see it, they will become afraid of it and come back, and they will say: 'We are afraid of it; we do not have the ability to enter it.' The Lord will say: 'Enter it in humiliation.'" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had those people entered it the first time, it would have become coolness and safety for them."
Al-Bazzar recorded this narration with two da'if (weak) chains. Before this, in Kitab al-Qadar, the hadiths have passed concerning those who died in the interval between Prophets (al-fatrah).
