Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 18125

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty addressed Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) with one hundred and forty thousand words over three days, and all of this speech consisted of counsels (that is, exhortations and instructions). When Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) afterwards heard the speech of human beings, it was displeasing to him, because the speech of the Lord had entered his hearing. Among what the Lord said to him during that address was this; He said: 'O Musa! Those who act for My sake have not done any deed like renouncing the world, those who seek nearness to Me have not done (any deed) like avoiding what I have made unlawful for them, and the worshippers have not worshipped Me (in any way) like weeping out of fear of Me.' Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) said: 'O Lord of all creation! O Master of the Day of Recompense! O Possessor of Majesty and Honour! What have You prepared for them, and how will You reward them?' The Lord said: 'O Musa! As for those who renounce the world, I have made My Paradise permissible for them; they will settle wherever they wish. As for those who avoid what I have made unlawful for them, every servant who comes before Me on the Day of Resurrection, I will investigate and scrutinise him regarding what was in his hands, except for the God-fearing; I will honour them and admit them into Paradise without any reckoning. As for those who weep out of fear of Me, for them is the Highest Companionship, in which no one will share with them.'"
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Juwaybir bin Sa'id, who is da'if (weak).
