Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I entered Paradise and heard a footstep ahead of me. I asked: Whose is this? He (the angel) said: It is Sayyiduna Bilal's (may Allah be pleased with him). I went on, and the majority of the people of Paradise were the Muhajirun and the children of the Muslims, and the fewest there were the well-off and women. I was told: As for the well-off, they are held back at the gate, being called to account and examined; as for the women, the two red things, gold and silk, made them heedless." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then we came out through one of the eight gates of Paradise. When I was at the gate, a balance was brought. I was placed in one pan and my Ummah was placed in the other pan, and my pan was heavier. Then Abu Bakr was brought and placed in one pan, and my whole Ummah was brought and placed in the other pan, and Abu Bakr's pan was heavier. Then Umar was brought and placed in one pan, and my whole Ummah was brought and placed in the other pan, and Umar's pan was heavier. Then my Ummah was presented to me one by one, and they kept passing by. Abd al-Rahman was late in coming; he came when hope for him had been lost. I said: O Abd al-Rahman! (Where were you left behind?) He said: O Messenger of Allah! May my father and mother be sacrificed for you! By the One who sent you with the truth, I have come to you, freed, at a time when I was thinking that I would never be freed to come to you except after growing old (while giving account). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: For what? Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: I was being called to account and examined because of the abundance of my wealth."
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and Imam al-Tabarani recorded something similar. Both their chains contain a narrator, Mutarrih bin Yazid, and a narrator, Ali bin Yazid, and there is agreement on the weakness of both of them. Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) is one of those who had the honour of taking part in the Battle of Badr and al-Hudaybiyah, and he is one of the ten who were given the testimony of Paradise, and he is among the most excellent of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them).
