وَعَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ : أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُعْطِي النَّاسَ عَطَاءَهُمْ ، فَجَاءَهُ رَجُلٌ فَأَعْطَاهُ أَلْفَ دِرْهَمٍ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : خُذْهَا فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - يَقُولُ : " إِنَّمَا أَهْلَكَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمُ الدِّينَارُ وَالدِّرْهَمُ ، وَهُمَا مُهْلِكَاكُمْ " . رَوَاهُ الْبَزَّارُ ، وَإِسْنَادُهُ جَيِّدٌ .
It is reported about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was giving people their stipends. A man came to him, and he gave him one thousand dirhams and then said: "Take it! I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Those who came before you were destroyed only by the dinar and the dirham, and these two will destroy you as well.'"
