Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 17675

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever seeks the praise of people through disobedience to Allah Almighty, Allah Almighty will turn the one who praises him into one who condemns him." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Through this Companion,
Al-Tirmidhi recorded this narration: "Whoever seeks the pleasure of people through the displeasure of Allah Almighty, Allah Almighty will be angry with him and will make people angry with him too." Al-Bazzar recorded it through Qutbah bin al-Ala' from his father, and both of them are da'if (weak). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Some hadiths of this kind have already passed.
