Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite:
'Allahumma inni as'aluka ilman nafi'an, wa a'udhu bika min ilmin la yanfa''
(O Allah! I ask You for beneficial knowledge, and I seek Your refuge from knowledge that does not benefit.) (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The narration of Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) has been recorded by Ibn Majah with these words:
'Salu Allaha ilman nafi'an' (Ask Allah Almighty for beneficial knowledge.)
Whereas in the narration recorded here, it is mentioned that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself used to make this supplication.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its chain is hasan (fair).
