Sa'ib al-Thaqafi narrates: I was with Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he was making a supplication during his prayer. A man came to him, and Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Recite:
'Allahumma bi 'ilmika al-ghayba, wa qudratika 'ala al-khalq, ahyini ma 'alimta al-hayata khayran li, waqbidni idha 'alimta al-wafata khayran li, Allahumma inni as'aluka al-khashyata fi al-ghaybi wa al-shahadah, wa kalimata al-haqqi fi al-rida wa al-ghadab, wa al-qasda fi al-ghina wa al-faqr, wa as'aluka al-rida bi al-qada', wa barda al-'ayshi ba'da al-mawt, wa as'aluka shawqan ila liqa'ika fi ghayri darra'a mudirrah, wa la fitnatin mudillah, Allahumma zayyinni bi zinati al-iman, waj'alni min al-hudati al-muhtadin' (O Allah, by means of Your knowledge of the unseen and Your power over creation, I supplicate that You keep me alive for as long as You know that life is better for me, and give me death when, according to Your knowledge, death is better for me. O Allah, I ask You for fear (of You) in the unseen and the seen, (I ask You for) the word of truth in contentment and in anger, (I ask You for) moderation in affluence and in poverty, I ask You for contentment with the decree of destiny and a cool life after death, and I ask You for longing to come into Your presence, without any harm befalling or any misleading trial. O Allah, adorn me with the adornment of faith, and include me among those who follow guidance and are rightly guided).
The narrator says: Then Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Shall I teach you words which are more beautiful than these? The narrator says: It seemed as though he was attributing them to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: When you go to your bed at night, recite:
'Allahumma inni sallamtu nafsi ilayka, wa wajjahtu wajhi ilayka, wa fawwadtu amri ilayka, amantu bi kitabika al-munazzal, wa nabiyyika al-mursal, inna nafsi nafsun khalaqtaha, laka mahyaha wa laka mamatuha, fa in amattaha farhamha, wa in akhkhartaha fahfazha bi hifzi al-iman' (O Allah, I have surrendered myself to You, I have turned my face towards You, I have entrusted my affair to You, and I believe in Your revealed Book and in Your sent Prophet. Indeed, my self is a self which You created; its life is for You and its death is for You. If You give it death, then have mercy on it, and if You postpone (its death), then protect it (my self) with the protection of faith).
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
Al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) recorded this narration in a shorter form than this.
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), except that the narrator Ata' bin al-Sa'ib suffered from confusion (ikhtilat).
