Book of Supplications
بَابُ الْأَدْعِيَةِ الْمَأْثُورَةِ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - الَّتِي دَعَا بِهَا ، وَعَلَّمَهَا .

وَعَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ : أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ : " مَنْ قَالَ : اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ، عَالِمَ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ ، إِنِّي أَعْهَدُ إِلَيْكَ فِي هَذِهِ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا أَنِّي أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ ، وَحْدَكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ ، وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُكَ وَرَسُولُكُ ; فَإِنَّكَ إِنْ تَكِلْنِي إِلَى نَفْسِي تُقَرِّبْنِي إِلَى الشَّرِّ ، وَتُبَاعِدْنِي مِنَ الْخَيْرِ ، وَإِنِّي لَا أَثِقُ إِلَّا بِرَحْمَتِكَ ; فَاجْعَلْ لِي عِنْدَكَ عَهْدًا تُوَفِّينِيهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ، إِنَّكَ لَا تُخْلِفُ الْمِيعَادَ ، إِلَّا قَالَ اللَّهُ - عَزَّ وَجَلَّ - يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ لِمَلَائِكَتِهِ : إِنَّ عَبْدِي عَهِدَ عِنْدِي عَهْدًا فَأَوْفُوهُ إِيَّاهُ ; فَيُدْخِلُهُ اللَّهُ - عَزَّ وَجَلَّ - الْجَنَّةَ " .
قَالَ سُهَيْلٌ : فَأَخْبَرْتُ الْقَاسِمَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ : أَنَّ عَوْنًا أَخْبَرَنِي بِكَذَا وَكَذَا ، فَقَالَ : مَا فِي أَهْلِنَا جَارِيَةٌ إِلَّا وَهِيَ تَقُولُ هَذَا فِي خِدْرِهَا .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَرِجَالُهُ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ ، إِلَّا أَنَّ عَوْنَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ لَمْ يَسْمَعْ مِنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ .
قَالَ سُهَيْلٌ : فَأَخْبَرْتُ الْقَاسِمَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ : أَنَّ عَوْنًا أَخْبَرَنِي بِكَذَا وَكَذَا ، فَقَالَ : مَا فِي أَهْلِنَا جَارِيَةٌ إِلَّا وَهِيَ تَقُولُ هَذَا فِي خِدْرِهَا .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَرِجَالُهُ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ ، إِلَّا أَنَّ عَوْنَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ لَمْ يَسْمَعْ مِنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Whoever recites:
'Allahumma rabba al-samawati wa al-ard, 'alima al-ghaybi wa al-shahadah, inni a'hadu ilayka fi hadhihi al-hayati al-dunya anni ashhadu an la ilaha illa anta, wahdaka la sharika laka, wa anna Muhammadan 'abduka wa rasuluka, fa innaka in takilni ila nafsi tuqarribni ila al-sharri wa tuba'idni min al-khayr, wa inni la athiqu illa bi rahmatika, faj'al li 'indaka 'ahdan tuwaffinihi yawma al-qiyamah, innaka la tukhlifu al-mi'ad' (O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen! In this worldly life I make this covenant before You, and I bear witness that there is no god but You; You alone are worthy of worship, You have no partner, and Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is Your servant and Your Messenger. If You were to leave me to my own self, You would bring me close to evil and take me far from good. I rely only on Your mercy, so establish for me a covenant with You which You will fulfil for me on the Day of Resurrection; indeed, You do not break Your promise). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then on the Day of Resurrection Allah Almighty will say to the angels: 'My servant made a covenant with Me, so give him its full recompense!' Then Allah Almighty will admit that servant into Paradise."
The narrator named Suhayl says: I told al-Qasim bin Abd al-Rahman that the narrator named Awn had narrated such-and-such to me. Al-Qasim said: Even the secluded girls of our household recite this supplication while in their seclusion (that is, they have learned this supplication even while remaining in seclusion).
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except that the narrator Awn bin Abdullah did not hear from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).
