Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A young man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Teach me a supplication by which I may attain good. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Come close! He came close, until his knees were touching the knees of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said (that is, recite):
'Allahumma u'fu 'anni, fa innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbu al-'afwa, wa anta 'afuwwun karim' (O Allah, pardon me, for indeed You are the Pardoner and You love to pardon, and You are the Pardoner, the Generous).
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Yahya bin Maymun al-Tammar, who is matruk (abandoned).
