Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 17067

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the frightening dreams he used to see at night, and those dreams would come between him and the (voluntary) night prayer. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Khalid bin al-Walid, shall I not teach you words which you should recite? If you recite them three times, Allah Almighty will remove this thing from you." Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Yes, indeed! O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, I complained of this to you only in the hope that I would find some solution for it from you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Recite:
'A'udhu bi-kalimatillahit-tammah min ghadabihi wa 'iqabih, wa sharri 'ibadih, wa min hamazatish-shayatini wa an yahdurun' (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, from the evil of His servants, and from the whisperings of the devils and from their coming to me.)"
Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: After a few days had passed, Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) came and said: "O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you! By the One who sent you with the truth, I had not yet recited the words you taught me three times when Allah Almighty removed from me what I used to experience. Now I would not even care if I entered a lion's den at night."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains al-Hakam bin Abdullah al-Ayli, who is matruk (abandoned).
