Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he complained to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), saying: "I feel fear at night." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not teach you words which Jibril taught me? He stated that an 'ifrit from among the jinn was plotting against me, and he recited:
'A'udhu bi-kalimatillahit-tammat allati la yujawizuhunna barrun wa la fajir, min sharri ma yanzilu min as-sama'i wa ma ya'ruju fiha, wa min sharri ma dhara'a fil-ardi wa ma yakhruju minha, wa min sharri fitan al-layli wa fitan an-nahar, wa min sharri tawariq al-layli wan-nahar, illa tariqan yatruqu bi-khayr, ya Rahman' (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah, which no righteous or wicked person can go beyond, from the evil of whatever descends from the sky and whatever ascends to it, from the evil of whatever He has spread in the earth and whatever comes out of it, from the evil of the trials of the night and the trials of the day, and from those that come by night and by day, except one who comes bringing good, O Most Merciful!)"
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains al-Musayyab bin Wadih, whom more than one scholar declared thiqah (trustworthy) and a group declared da'if (weak); the same applies to al-Hasan bin Ali al-Ma'mari; the remaining narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.
