Abu Ishaq al-Hamdani narrates from his father: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote it down for me and said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed me about this, saying: When you go to your bed, recite:
'A'udhu bi-wajhillahil-karim, wa kalimatihit-tammah, min sharri ma anta akhidhun bi-nasiyatih, Allahumma anta takshiful-maghrama wal-ma'tham, Allahumma la yuhzamu junduk, wa la yukhlafu wa'duk, wa la yanfa'u dhal-jaddi minkal-jadd, subhanaka wa bi-hamdik' (I seek refuge in the Countenance of Allah, the Most Generous, and in His perfect words, from the evil of everything whose forelock You hold. O Allah, You alone remove debt and sin. O Allah, Your army is not defeated, Your promise is not broken, and the effort of one who strives is of no avail against You. You are free of every defect, and all praise belongs to You alone).
Abu Ishaq says: I mentioned this to Abu Maysarah al-Hamdani, and he too narrated to me something similar from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), except that he narrated these words: "from the evil of that whose forelock You have seized in Your grip."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Hammad bin Abd al-Rahman al-Kufi, who is da'if (weak).
