Al-Sa'ib bin Malik narrates: I was with Umarah when a man came to him and said: Shall I not teach you some words? It seemed as though he was attributing these words to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When you go to your bed at night, recite:
'Allahumma aslamtu nafsi ilayk, wa wajjahtu wajhi ilayk, wa fawwadtu amri ilayk, wa alja'tu zahri ilayk, amantu bi-kitabikal-munazzal, wa nabiyyikal-mursal. Allahumma nafsi khalaqtaha, laka mahyaha wa laka mamatuha, in tawaffaytaha farhamha, wa in akhkhartaha fahfazha bi-hifzil-iman' (O Allah, we have surrendered ourselves to You; I have turned my face to You, entrusted my affair to You and leaned my back upon You. I have believed in Your Book that was sent down and in Your Prophet who was sent. O Allah, You created my being; its life belongs to You and its death belongs to You. If You cause it to die, have mercy on it, and if You delay it, protect it along with faith).
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, who had become confused (ikhtilat); the remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
