Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went away for some need, and the time of prayer came upon the people, so Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) stepped forward (and began leading the prayer). Meanwhile, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived and prayed one rak'ah behind Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) along with the people. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) concluded with the salam, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have done right" (the narrator is unsure whether the words were:) "You have done well."
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Bazzar recorded this narration, and their wording is: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached him, he was leading the prayer. He wanted to step back, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) signalled to him to stay in his place. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed following Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him).
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded this narration, and the narrators of Imam al-Bazzar are the narrators of the Sahih.
