Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 142

Ubaydullah bin Umayr al-Laythi narrates this statement from his father: On the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, the friends of Allah are those who pray: the one who performs the five prayers which Allah Almighty has made obligatory upon him, fasts in Ramadan seeking reward for his fasting, pays zakah with a glad heart seeking reward, and avoids the major sins which Allah Almighty has forbidden (such people too are friends of Allah)." One of his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions said: O Messenger of Allah! How many are the major sins? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "They are nine, the greatest of which is associating partners with Allah. (The other major sins are:) killing a believer unjustly, fleeing from the battlefield, slandering a chaste woman, practising magic, consuming the wealth of an orphan, consuming usury (riba), disobeying Muslim parents, and violating the sanctity of the Ancient House (al-Bayt al-Atiq), which is sacred and is your qiblah in life and in death. Whoever dies in such a state that he has not committed any of these major sins, and he establishes prayer and pays zakah, such a person will be with Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in the midst of Paradise, whose doors have leaves made of gold."
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say that Imam Abu Dawud recorded part of the narration.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.
