Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once I, Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), Fatimah and Zayd bin Harithah were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! I have grown old, my bones have become weak and my expenses have increased. If you see fit, order such-and-such a thing for me, that is, order so many wasq of grain for me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: We will do so. Fatimah said: O Messenger of Allah! If you see fit, give an order for me too like the one you have given for your uncle. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: We will do so. Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, you had given me a piece of land from which I used to make my living; then you took it back. If you see fit, return it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: We will do so. After this the narrator mentioned the complete hadith; Imam Abu Dawud has also recorded this narration.
Imam Ahmad, Imam Abu Ya'la and Imam al-Bazzar recorded this narration, and they narrated these additional words: I said: O Messenger of Allah! If you see fit, appoint me in charge of that right which Allah Almighty has fixed for you in His Book, which relates to the khumus (one-fifth), so that I may distribute it in your place, so that no one disputes with me after you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: We will do so. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed me in charge of it, and during his lifetime I was the one who distributed it. Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) appointed me in charge of it, and I was the one who distributed it. The narrators of both these narrations are thiqat (trustworthy).
