Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 1392

Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he went to relieve himself. Then he gestured to me, so I went forward and brought him water. He (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing a Syrian cloak that had no sleeves; he threw it over his shoulder and said: "Pour water for me." I poured water for him, and he performed ablution and wiped over the leather socks. So the Sunnah for the traveller is three days and three nights, and for the resident one day and one night.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and part of it is reported in the "Sahih". Its chain contains a narrator, Dawud bin Yazid al-Awdi; the hadith scholars declared him "da'if" (weak), except Ibn Adi, who says: I have not seen any munkar hadith from him that goes beyond the limit when a trustworthy person narrates from him; even though he is not strong in hadith, his hadith is written down, and it is accepted when a trustworthy person narrates from him. Makki bin Ibrahim narrated from him, and he is one of the narrators of the "Sahih", so according to the statement of Ibn Adi this narrator is acceptable. And Allah knows best.
