Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 13469

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: A severe famine struck Quraysh, so much so that they began eating even the (scraps) stuck to bones. At that time no one in Quraysh was more prosperous than the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): "O uncle, you know that your brother Abu Talib has many dependants, and you can see the situation that has befallen Quraysh. Come with us to him so that we may take on the responsibility for some of his family." So the two of them went to Abu Talib and said: "O Abu Talib, your people are facing the situation that you can see, and we know that you are one of them. We have come to take on the responsibility for some of your family." Abu Talib said: "Leave Aqil for me, and do whatever you both like with the rest." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) took Sayyiduna Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him). The two of them remained like this until they became self-sufficient. Sulayman bin Dawud says: Sayyiduna Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) remained with Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) until he migrated to the land of Abyssinia.
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its chain contains narrators whom I do not know.
