Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In the time of Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him), two men from the Children of Israel stated their lineage before one another; one of them was a Muslim and the other a polytheist. The polytheist, stating his lineage, said: 'I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so,' until he had named nine of his forefathers. Then he said to the other: 'State your lineage, may you have no mother.' He said: 'I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so, and I disown whatever lies beyond that.' Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) had an announcement made among the people and gathered them, and then said: 'As for you, the one who traced his lineage back to nine forefathers, you will complete their number as the tenth in Hell; and as for you, the one who traced his lineage back to two forefathers, you are a man from the people of Islam.'"
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and Ahmad recorded it as mawquf (a statement of Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) himself). The narrators of one of al-Tabarani's chains are the narrators of the Sahih, and so are the narrators of Ahmad.
