بَابٌ فِيمَنِ افْتَخَرَ بِأَهْلِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ
One who boasts of the people of Jahiliyyah

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ : " لَا تَفْخَرُوا بِآبَائِكُمُ الَّذِينَ مَاتُوا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ ، فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لِمَا يُدَهْدِهُ الْجُعَلُ بِمَنْخَرَيْهِ خَيْرٌ مِنْ آبَائِكُمُ الَّذِينَ مَاتُوا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ " . رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ وَالطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ وَالْكَبِيرِ بِنَحْوِهِ ، إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " لَلَّذِي يُدَهْدِهُ الْجِعْلَانُ بِأَنْفِهِ خَيْرٌ مِنْهُمْ " . وَرِجَالُ أَحْمَدَ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not boast about your forefathers who died in the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance). By the One in whose hand is my soul, what the ju'al (a kind of insect or bird) rolls along with its nostrils is better than those forefathers of yours who died in the Jahiliyyah."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir with similar wording, except that he said: "What the ju'lan (a kind of bird or insect) roll along with their noses is better than them." The narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih.
