Ikrimah narrates: The name of Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Samurah was Abd Kallub, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had named him Abd al-Rahman. Once he passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was performing ablution (wudu). He said: "Abd al-Rahman, come here!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Never seek a position of authority, for if you seek it and are given it, you will be left to it on your own; and if you do not seek it, you will be helped in it."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat as a mursal report through Ishaq bin Abdullah bin Kaysan, and that narrator is da'if (weak).
