Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 12887

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) named him Muta' and said to him: "You will be muta' (one who is obeyed, a leader) among your people." He said to him: "Go to your companions." He gave him a piebald horse, gave him the banner, and said: "Whoever enters under this banner of yours will be safe from the punishment."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a group of narrators whom I do not know.
