وَعَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ :
لَمَّا وُلِدَ الْحَسَنُ سَمَّاهُ حَمْزَةَ ، فَلَمَّا وُلِدَ الْحُسَيْنُ سَمَّاهُ بِعَمِّهِ جَعْفَرٍ ، قَالَ : فَدَعَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فَقَالَ : " إِنِّي أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أُغَيِّرَ اسْمَ ابْنَيَّ هَذَيْنِ " . قُلْتُ : اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ . فَسَمَّاهُمَا حَسَنًا وَحُسَيْنًا .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ وَأَبُو يَعْلَى بِنَحْوِهِ وَالْبَزَّارُ وَالطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَفِيهِ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَقِيلٍ ، وَحَدِيثُهُ حَسَنٌ ، وَبَقِيَّةُ رِجَالِهِ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .
لَمَّا وُلِدَ الْحَسَنُ سَمَّاهُ حَمْزَةَ ، فَلَمَّا وُلِدَ الْحُسَيْنُ سَمَّاهُ بِعَمِّهِ جَعْفَرٍ ، قَالَ : فَدَعَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فَقَالَ : " إِنِّي أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أُغَيِّرَ اسْمَ ابْنَيَّ هَذَيْنِ " . قُلْتُ : اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ . فَسَمَّاهُمَا حَسَنًا وَحُسَيْنًا .

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When Hasan was born, he named him Hamzah; when Husayn was born, he named him Ja'far after his paternal uncle. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called me and said: I have been commanded to change the names of these two sons of mine. (Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says:) I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) named them Hasan and Husayn.
Ahmad recorded it, Abu Ya'la recorded something similar, and al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqil, whose hadith is hasan (good). The rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
