Al-Hasan narrates: Once some of the nobles of Quraysh gathered at the door of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). Among them were al-Harith bin Hisham, Abu Sufyan bin Harb and Suhayl bin Amr, and besides them there were also some slaves or freed slaves from among the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the one who announced visitors came out and informed them: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) has given permission to Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) and some others, and he has not yet given it to the rest. Abu Sufyan said: "I have never seen a day like today: he has given permission to the slaves and left us sitting at his door, and has not given us permission!" Then Suhayl bin Amr, who was a man of sense, said: "O people, by Allah, I see what is on your faces. If you must be angry, be angry with yourselves, for those people were invited and you were invited too; they hastened (to accept the invitation) and you delayed." Then he said: "By Allah, the virtue that you have missed out on is a greater loss to you than this door at which you are angry (at being denied permission)." Al-Hasan says: "By Allah, Allah Almighty has not made the servant who hastens towards Him like the servant who is slow in coming to Him."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except that the narrator al-Hasan did not hear from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).
