Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) reports about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting in his chamber when someone peeped in through a gap in the door. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him; at that time he had in his hand a stick (used for scratching). He said: "Had I known that you were looking at me, I would have got up and struck this (stick) into your eye. The command to seek permission has been given only so that the gaze is held back."
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in this way as a narration of Sufyan bin Husayn from al-Zuhri, and that narration is da'if (weak).
