Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Al-Salam is one of the names of Allah Almighty which He has placed on earth, so spread it among yourselves. When a Muslim man passes by a group of people and greets them with salam and they reply to him, he has a degree of excellence over them because he reminded them of that name; and if they do not reply to him, then One who is better and purer than them replies to him (the one who gave the greeting)."
Al-Bazzar recorded it with two chains, and al-Tabarani with various chains; the narrators of one of them are the narrators of the Sahih, in the narration recorded by al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani.
