Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 12721

Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) learned about a man that he worshipped intensely, he would ask about his intellect. If the people said it was in good condition, he would say: "I have hope of good for him." And if the people said otherwise, he would say: "Your companion has not reached the station you think he has."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Marwan bin Salim, who is matruk (abandoned).
