Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 11360

Sayyiduna al-Dahhak bin Abi Jabirah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: In the time of Jahiliyyah they had bad names. Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called a man by his nickname (that is, a bad name), and it was said: "O Messenger of Allah! This man dislikes this (name)." So Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "And do not insult one another with nicknames" to the end of the verse.
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
