Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The ruling on the prohibition of wine was revealed concerning two of the tribes of the Ansar. They drank wine, and when they became thoroughly drunk they began behaving foolishly with one another. When they came to their senses, a man saw that there were marks on his face, his head and his beard, and he said: "My brother so-and-so did this. By Allah! If he had been kind and merciful towards me, he would not have done this to me." The narrator says: They had been brothers to one another, with no enmity in their hearts, but then grudges entered their hearts. So Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "Indeed, wine, gambling, idols and divining arrows are impure things of the work of Satan, so avoid them so that you may be successful. Satan only wants to stir up enmity and hatred between you through wine and gambling and to hinder you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer; so will you not desist (from wine, gambling and the like)?" Then some people said: "This is an impure thing, and it was in the stomach of so-and-so who was martyred on the day of Badr, and it was in the stomach of so-and-so who was martyred on the day of Uhud." So Allah Almighty revealed this verse concerning it: "There is no sin upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they ate before" (to the end of the verse).
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih. A hadith of this kind has already passed in the chapter on drinks, under the prohibition of wine.
