Abu Majid al-Hanafi narrates: A man came to Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) bringing his nephew, who was intoxicated. The man said: "I found him in a state of intoxication." Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Move him about, shake him, and smell his breath." The people moved him about and smelled him, and the smell of wine came from him. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered that the boy be imprisoned. The next day he was taken out. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered that a whip be prepared; its tip was removed until it became smooth. Then he said to the flogger: "Flog, keep your hand held back, and give every limb its due." So he struck him in a way that was painful but left no marks, and this punishment was given to the boy while he was clothed: he was wearing a cloak (qaba') and trousers, or a shirt and trousers. After that, the narrator mentioned the complete hadith, which has already passed in the chapter on the prescribed punishment for theft.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and the narrator Abu Majid is da'if (weak).
