The Virtue of Sleeping with Wudu (Ablution)
❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“And We made the night as a garment. And We made the day for livelihood.”
Hadith 1
“Sayyiduna Bara’ ibn Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said to me: When you are about to sleep, perform ablution like the ablution for prayer, then lie down on your right side.” Then recite this supplication: “O Allah! I have turned my face towards You and entrusted my affairs to You, and I have placed my back with hope and fear towards You, and I have fled to You; there is no refuge or escape except with You. I believe in Your revealed Book and Your sent Prophet (peace be upon him).” Then he said, if you die that night, you will die on the natural religion, that is, on the truth. And say these words at the end, that is, then sleep without talking. Bara’ ibn Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when I recited this supplication to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), when I reached ”آمَنْتُ بِنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ“ and recited وَرَسُولِكَ, he said: ” نهيں وَنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ“

The Virtue of Performing Fajr Prayer in Congregation
❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“And glorify the praises of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting. And during some part of the night, glorify Him and after the prostrations.”
Hadith 4
“And Sayyiduna Qais رضي الله عنه said that Sayyiduna Jarir bin Abdullah رضي الله عنه told me that we were with the Prophet Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم when he saw the moon on the fourteenth night and said: You will soon see your Lord just as you see Him, and in seeing Him you will not feel any difficulty. So if you are able that two prayers do not get missed from you before sunrise and sunset (i.e., Fajr and Asr), then do so. Then he recited the command of Allah Almighty: ‘And glorify and praise your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting.'”
The reward of remaining engaged in prayer, charity, repentance, seeking forgiveness, remembrance, and supplication until the lunar eclipse ends
❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“And the moon is eclipsed.”
Hadith 5
“And it is narrated from Sayyidna Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day Prophet Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, there was also a solar eclipse on the same day. Some people said that the eclipse occurred due to the death of Ibrahim, the son of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: The sun and the moon are among the signs of Allah. Their eclipses do not occur because of anyone’s death or life. When you see it, supplicate to Allah and offer prayer until the sun becomes clear.”
The virtue of staying up at night and waking family members for prayer at night
❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“Establish prayer from the decline of the sun until the darkness of the night, and the morning prayer as well. Indeed, the morning prayer is witnessed (by the angels). And during some part of the night, pray Tahajjud (with the Quran), it is expected that your Lord will raise you to a praised station.”
Hadith 6
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: When any one of you sleeps, Satan ties three knots at the back of his head. He recites an incantation on each knot. The night is long, so let him sleep well. If he wakes up and remembers Allah, one knot is undone. Then if he performs ablution, another knot is undone. Then if he prays, all knots are undone, and he begins his morning feeling refreshed and pure in spirit. Otherwise, his morning will be with a corrupt soul and sluggishness.”
Staying up at night is a means of protection from Hellfire
Hadith 7
“And Salim narrates from his father Abdullah bin Umar رضي الله عنه that if anyone saw a dream during the life of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, he would narrate it to him. I wished that I too would see a dream and narrate it to the Messenger of Allah I was a young boy and used to sleep in the mosque during the life of the Messenger of Allah Then I saw a dream as if two angels had caught me and taken me towards Hell, which was like a well with two iron gates. There were some people in it whom I knew. (I seek refuge with Allah from the fire). Then we met another angel who said to me, ‘Do not be afraid.’ I narrated this dream to Hafsa رضي الله عنها (the sister of Ibn Umar رضي الله عنه). She narrated it to the Messenger of Allah He said: ‘Abdullah is a good man.’ If he used to pray at night. After that, Abdullah bin Umar رضي الله عنه used to sleep very little at night.”

When you were ill or tired, you would pray sitting down.”
Hadith 9
Muhaddith Albani has declared it authentic.
“And Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam رضي الله عنه narrates that when the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم came to Madinah Munawwarah, people hurried to meet him and it was said that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم has arrived. I also came with the people to see him. When I looked closely at his face, I recognized that your face could not be the face of a liar. The very first thing you said was: O people! Spread peace (Salam), feed the hungry, and pray at night while people are asleep. You will enter Paradise in peace.”
The Virtue of Reciting and Obeying the Quran
❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“Not all of them are alike; among the People of the Book is a community standing on the truth, who recite the verses of Allah during the night, and they prostrate.”

And Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: It is only permissible to envy two types of people. One is the person whom Allah has given the Quran (meaning He has granted him the ability to memorize it), so he spends the hours of the night and day in it (worshiping Allah). And the other is the person whom Allah has blessed with wealth, so he spends it in the way of Allah during the hours of the night and day.

The Most Beloved Prayer to Allah is the Prayer of Dawud (peace be upon him)
❀ Allah Almighty said:
“And David certainly found favor in Our sight; indeed, We tried him, so he asked forgiveness of his Lord and fell down bowing [in prostration] and was repentant. So We forgave him. And indeed, for him is nearness to Us and a good place of return.”
Hadith 14
“And Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Among all fasts, the fasts of Dawud (peace be upon him) are most beloved to Allah, and among all prayers, the prayer of Dawud (peace be upon him) is most beloved.
“And Sayyid Nashadad bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that the master of seeking forgiveness (greater than all other forms of seeking forgiveness) is to say: O Allah! You are my Lord, there is no deity worthy of worship except You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I uphold Your covenant and promise. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favor upon me and I confess my sins. So forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Whoever recites this in a state of certainty in the morning and dies before evening, he will enter Paradise. And whoever recites this in a state of certainty in the evening and dies that night, he will enter Paradise.”
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to recite these supplications every morning and evening
Hadith 36
Al-Muhaddith Al-Albani has declared it authentic.
“And Jabir bin Abi Sulayman bin Jabir bin Mut’im, may Allah have mercy on him, narrated from Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, and he narrated that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to recite the following supplications every morning and evening: ‘O Allah! I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah! I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my wealth. O Allah! Cover my faults.’ And Uthman (the narrator) said: ‘Keep my faults and my anxieties in peace. O Allah! Protect me from in front of me, from behind me, from my right, from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your greatness from being destroyed suddenly from beneath me.'”
The Virtue of Reciting SubhanAllah wa Bihamdihi One Hundred Times in the Morning and Evening
Hadith 37
And Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Whoever recites سُبحَانَ اللهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ one hundred times in the morning and evening, on the Day of Judgment, there will be no one with deeds greater than his, except the one who recites سُبحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ one hundred times like him or more.
The Virtue of Reciting the Last Verses of Surah Al-Baqarah Before Sleeping
Hadith 38
“And Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud رضي الله عنه narrates that the Noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice to protect him from every calamity.”
The Virtue of Saying SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar Before Sleeping
Hadith 39
“And Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Sayyida Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) used to suffer greatly from grinding at the mill. She came to know that some captives had arrived with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), so she also came with a request for one of the maidservants or slaves among them, but the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was not present. She then spoke to Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) about it and returned. When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) arrived, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) presented their request before him. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came to us (at night) when we were already lying on our beds. When we saw him, we began to stand up. He said: ‘Remain lying in your places.’ (He sat so close to me that) I felt the coolness of his feet on my chest. Then he said: ‘Why should I not tell you something better than what you both have asked for? When you both lie down on your beds, before sleeping, recite Allahu Akbar 34 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, SubhanAllah 33 times; this practice is better than what you both have asked for.'”
Seeking Refuge in Allah Before Sleep for Children
Hadith 40
“And Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to seek refuge for Hasan and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them) and used to say: Your great grandfather (Ibrahim, peace be upon him) also used to seek Allah’s refuge for Ismail and Ishaq (peace be upon them) through these words. I seek refuge in Allah with all His perfect words from every devil, every poisonous creature, and every harmful evil eye.”
