Tears of Joy
❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“And He it is Who makes (men) laugh and weep.”
Hadith 1
“(The wife of the Prophet Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) Sayyida Aisha رضي الله عنها narrates that when we were sitting at the house of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه at sunset (dusk), someone told him that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم was coming with his head covered. At that time, it was not his habit to come to us. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq رضي الله عنه said: May my parents be sacrificed for him! By Allah! His coming at this time is for some important purpose. Sayyida Aisha رضي الله عنها said that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم came and asked for permission to enter. After permission was granted, he entered and said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Send out the people who are present with you. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه said: O Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم! My father be sacrificed for you.”
The Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) smile upon hearing the questioner’s words
Hadith 2
“And Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that a man came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said, ‘I am ruined. I have had intercourse with my wife during the month of Ramadan.’ The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘Free a slave.’ He said: ‘I do not have a slave.’ The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘Then fast for two consecutive months.’ He said: ‘I do not have the strength to fast those days.’ The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘Then feed sixty poor people.’ He said: ‘That is beyond my means.’ At that moment, a large basket filled with dates was brought to the Prophet (peace be upon him). (The narrator of the hadith) Ibrahim said: ‘Arq is a type of measure.’ The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘Where is the beggar? Give it to him as charity.’ He said: ‘Should I give it to someone more needy than me? By Allah! There is no household more in need than ours between the two sides of Medina Tayyiba.’ Upon hearing this, the Prophet (peace be upon him) smiled until his last teeth became visible, then said: ‘Very well, then you feed them now.'”
The Prophet Muhammad’s Smile at the Villager’s Words
Hadith 3
“And it is narrated from Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I was walking with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) who was wearing a Najrani cloak with thick edges. During this, a villager came and pulled the cloak very hard. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw the marks on the Prophet’s blessed shoulder caused by the forceful pulling of the cloak. Then the villager said: O Muhammad (peace be upon him)! Command me to give from the wealth of Allah that is with you. When you turned to look at him, you smiled, then you ordered that wealth to be given to him.”
Weeping in Solitude by Remembering Allah Almighty
Hadith 4
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that he reported from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that he said: There are seven types of people whom Allah Almighty will grant shade on the Day of Resurrection. On that day, there will be no shade except His shade. A just ruler, a youth who grew up in the worship of Allah, a person who remembered Allah in solitude and his eyes shed tears, a person whose heart is attached to the mosque, two persons who love each other only for Allah’s sake, a person who is called by a noble and beautiful woman but says, ‘I fear Allah,’ and a person who gives charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given in charity.”
The Virtue of Tears Shed out of Fear of Allah
❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“So it is fitting for them to laugh little and weep much for what they have earned.”
Hadith 5
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Muawiyah bin Haidah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Three types of eyes will not be spared from the fire of Hell: (One) the eye that keeps vigil in the way of Allah, (second) the eye that weeps out of fear of Allah, and (third) the eye that refrains from looking at what Allah has forbidden.”
Shedding Tears of the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم upon Hearing the Holy Quran
❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“These are the ones upon whom Allah bestowed favor from among the descendants of Adam and from those We carried with Noah in the ship, and from the descendants of Abraham and Israel, and from those whom We guided and chose. When the verses of the Most Merciful were recited to them, they would fall down in prostration and weeping.”
Hadith 6
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to me: ‘Recite the Quran to me.’ I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! Should I recite the Quran to you while the Wise Quran has been revealed upon you?’ He (peace be upon him) said: ‘I prefer to hear it from someone other than myself.’ So I recited Surah An-Nisa before him until I reached the verse: ‘So what will be the state when We bring from every nation a witness and We bring you as a witness over them all.’
Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘That is enough now.’ I turned towards him and saw tears flowing from the eyes of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).”
Shedding Tears of Regret
Hadith 7
Its chain of narration is authentic.
“And Sayyidna Isa (peace be upon him) advised his disciples, saying: ‘In Paradise, there is Tuba (shade of a tree) for the person who weeps tears of remorse over his sins, guards his tongue, and whose home becomes spacious for him.'”
The Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) Smiling upon Seeing the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them)
Hadith 8
“And Sayyidna Amr ibn Awf رضي الله عنه said that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم sent Sayyidna Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah رضي الله عنه to collect the jizya from Bahrain. When he returned from Bahrain with the wealth (one hundred eighty thousand dirhams of jizya), and the Ansar learned of his arrival, they performed the morning prayer with the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم (in the Prophet’s Mosque instead of their own tribal mosques). After finishing the prayer, they presented themselves before the Prophet Seeing them, he smiled and then said: ‘I think you have heard that Abu Ubaidah رضي الله عنه has returned with some wealth.’ They said, ‘Yes, O Messenger of Allah!’ He said, ‘Rejoice and hope that the time of your happiness and joy is coming. By Allah, I do not fear that you will become poor, but I fear that the wealth of this world will become abundant for you as it became for previous nations before you. Like them, you will be attracted to wealth and compete with one another to acquire it. This abundance, vastness, and excessive desire for this world will destroy you, just as it drove the people before you into ruin and destruction.'”
The Crying of the People of Hell
Hadith 9
“And it is narrated from Abdullah bin Qais, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: The people of Hell will cry so much that if ships were made from their tears, they would sail (the tears would run out), so the people of Hell will shed tears of blood instead of tears of water.”
The Crying over the Corpse of a Wicked Person
Hadith 10
“And Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, says that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: When the funeral is prepared and people carry it on their shoulders, the righteous person says: Take me quickly, but if he is not righteous, he says: Alas, destruction! Where are you taking me? The voice of the deceased is heard by all creatures except humans (and jinn); if a human hears it, he would faint.”
Allah’s Beloved Drop
Hadith 11
Muhaddith Al-Bani, may Allah have mercy on him, has classified it as Hasan.
“It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Imamah Bahili, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said: Nothing is more beloved to me than two drops and two marks. One drop is a tear shed out of fear of Allah, and the other drop is blood shed in the way of Allah. As for the two marks, one mark is that which is inflicted while fighting in the way of Allah, and the other mark is that which is inflicted while fulfilling one of Allah’s obligatory duties.”
The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, weeping uncontrollably at his mother’s grave
Hadith 12
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) visited the grave of his mother (went to her grave), he himself wept and made those around him weep as well, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: I asked my Lord for permission to ask for forgiveness for her but I was not given permission. Then I asked Him for permission to visit her grave and He gave me permission. You should visit graves because they remind you of death. The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) saw the necklace of Lady Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) and involuntarily wept.”
Hadith 13
Allama Albani (may Allah have mercy on him) graded it as Hasan.
“And it is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the people of Makkah sent their captive to Madinah, at that time Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her) sent some wealth in exchange for Abu al-As, and among that wealth was a necklace which belonged to Sayyida Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her), which she had given as dowry. Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: When the Prophet (peace be upon him) saw this necklace, he involuntarily wept over the state of poverty of Sayyida Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her), (and he remembered the companionship of Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her), because this necklace used to be around her neck.) Accordingly, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them): If you find it appropriate, then release the captive for the sake of Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her), and also return to her the wealth that belongs to her. All of them bowed their heads in obedience, meaning the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said: Yes, we will also return the wealth of Sayyida Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her) and release Abu al-As as well.”
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ wept on the death of Sayyidna Ibrahim
Hadith 14
“And Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we went with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) to Abu Saif the blacksmith, who was the husband of the wet nurse of Ibrahim (the son of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) also took Ibrahim in his lap, loved him, and kissed him. Then after that, we went to his house and saw that at that time Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him) was dying. The eyes of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) filled with tears. Then Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, have you also become impatient like people?’ The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘Ibn Awf (may Allah be pleased with him)! This is not impatience; this is mercy.’ Then he (peace be upon him) wept again and said: ‘Tears flow from the eyes and the heart is overwhelmed with grief, but with the tongue, we will say only what pleases our Lord. And O Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him)! We are saddened by your separation.'”
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ Wept on the Death of Sayyid Na Saad bin Ubadah
Hadith 15
“And Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Sayyiduna Saad bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) fell ill, so the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went to visit him accompanied by Abdur Rahman bin Awf, Saad bin Abi Waqqas, and Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with them) to check on his condition. When they reached him, they found him unconscious. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: Has he passed away? They replied: O Messenger of Allah, no. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) wept uncontrollably. When the people saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) crying, they too were affected. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Do you not hear that Allah does not punish because of the tears of the eye nor because of the grief of the heart? But He punishes because of the tongue, and he pointed towards his tongue. Or He shows mercy.”
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ Wept Over the Martyrdom of the Companions
Hadith 16
“And Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik رضی اللہ عنہ reports that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed the companions رضی اللہ عنہم about the martyrdom of Zaid, Ja’far, and Abdullah bin Rawahah رضی اللہ عنہم at a time when no news had yet arrived about them. The Prophet ﷺ kept saying that now Sayyiduna Zaid رضی اللہ عنہ is carrying the banner, now he has been martyred, now Sayyiduna Ja’far رضی اللہ عنہ has taken the banner, he too has been martyred. Tears were flowing from the eyes of the Prophet ﷺ. Finally, one of Allah’s swords (Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid رضی اللہ عنہ) took the banner in his hand, and Allah granted victory through his hand.”
Tears of Sayyida Umm Ayman
Hadith 17
This hadith is authentic.
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) had a daughter who was near death. He (peace be upon him) held her and lifted her in his lap, and she passed away while in his hands. Umm Ayman started crying loudly, so the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘Are you crying in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)?’ She said: ‘Do I not see you crying?’ He replied: ‘I am not crying; these are tears of mercy. Indeed, a believer is always in goodness. When his soul departs from his side, he is still praising Allah at that moment.'”
The Holy Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) Weeping Throughout the Night
Hadith 18
Ibn Khuzaymah has declared it authentic.
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of Badr, except for Sayyiduna Miqdad, none of our horsemen were with us. Every one of us slept deeply, except the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him), who sat under a tree worshipping Allah and weeping throughout the night.”
The Messenger of Allah’s (peace be upon him) Shedding Tears at the Grave
Hadith 19
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Bara’ رضي الله عنه that we were with the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم at a funeral. The Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم sat by the grave and began to weep until the soil became wet with his tears. Then the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said: O my brothers! Make some preparation for it (i.e., the grave).”
Weeping in Prostration
Hadith 20
Muhaddith Albani has declared it authentic.
“And it is reliably narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that once during the time of the Prophet ﷺ, the sun was eclipsed. The Prophet ﷺ stood up and began praying. He remained standing for such a long time that it seemed as if he would not go into bowing (ruku’). Then when he went into bowing, he stayed there so long that it seemed he would not go into prostration (sujood). After rising from prostration, he sat in the sitting position for so long that it seemed he would not prostrate again. Then he went into the second prostration, and it seemed as if he would not raise his head again. After that, the Prophet ﷺ took a deep breath and, crying, said: O my Lord! Did You not promise me that You would not punish these people as long as I am among them? O Lord! Did You not promise me that as long as these people continue to supplicate You, they would not be punished? O Lord! We seek Your supplication. When the Prophet ﷺ finished the two rak’ahs of prayer, by that time the solar eclipse had ended. Then he stood up, praised Allah, breathed a sigh of relief, and said: The sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah; they do not eclipse due to the death or birth of anyone. So when you see an eclipse, engage in the remembrance of Allah.”
The Tears of Sayyiduna Umar ibn Khattab (May Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith 21
Its chain of narration is authentic.
“And Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) told me that since I became the leader of the Muslims, I have not consumed even one dinar or one dirham from their wealth. Yes, we have filled our stomachs with their coarse flour and covered our backs with their coarse clothes. I have neither a little nor a lot from the spoils of the Muslims, except for an Abyssinian slave and a camel for fetching water, and except for this old cloak. When I die, hand them over to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and seek a discharge from him.” Accordingly, Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) did so. When the messenger reached Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he wept until tears flowed on the ground and said: “May Allah have mercy on Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). He has left hardship for those who come after him.”
Our Master Uthman Ghani رضي الله عنه crying
Hadith 22
Al-Muhaddith Al-Bani graded it as Hasan.
“And it is narrated from the freed slave of Hazrat Uthman رضي الله عنه, Hazrat Hani رضي الله عنه, who said: When Hazrat Uthman bin Affan رضي الله عنه stood by any grave, he would weep so much that his beard would become wet. Someone said: You mention Paradise and Hell, yet you do not weep, but you weep upon seeing this (grave). What is the reason for this? He said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: The grave is the first stage of the Hereafter. If a person is saved from it, then the subsequent stages will be easier. If he is not saved from it, then the subsequent stages will be more difficult. She narrates that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Of all the scenes I have ever seen, the grave is the most terrifying.”
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) smiling while making dua
Hadith 23
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) on Friday while he was delivering the sermon in Madinah Tayyibah. He said: There is a drought of rain, so please pray to your Lord for rain. The Prophet (peace be upon him) looked towards the sky. We could not see any clouds anywhere. The Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed for rain, then clouds appeared and moved towards each other, and then it started raining until the streams of Madinah Tayyibah began to flow. The rain continued like this until the next Friday and did not stop. On the following Friday, the same man or someone else stood up while the Prophet (peace be upon him) was delivering the sermon and said: We are drowning, please pray to your Lord to stop the rain now. The Prophet (peace be upon him) smiled and then prayed: ‘O Allah! Let it rain around us, but not upon us.’ He said this two or three times. Consequently, the clouds dispersed to the right and left of Madinah Tayyibah. It rained in other places around us, but the rain suddenly stopped over us. Allah showed the people the miracle of His Prophet (peace be upon him) and the acceptance of his prayer.”
It is permissible to weep, but not in the manner of the Age of Ignorance
Hadith 24
Al-Muhaddith Al-Albani has declared it authentic.
“And it is narrated from Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Whoever tears his garment, beats his face, and cries out in the manner of the Age of Ignorance is not one of us.”
The Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) smile at the words of a sinner
Hadith 25
“And Hazrat Abu Dharr (Ghafari) رضي الله عنه said that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said: I know the person who will enter Paradise last, and I also know the person who will be taken out of Hell last. On the Day of Resurrection, a person will be presented before the Divine Court, and it will be said: Present his minor sins, and keep his major sins hidden from him. Then it will be said: You committed such and such deeds on such and such days? He will admit to those deeds and will not deny them, and he will be fearful of his major sins. Then it will be said: For every sin he committed, give him one good deed in return. (When he sees this situation, he will say: I have some other sins as well which I do not see here.) Hazrat Abu Dharr رضي الله عنه said: I saw that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم laughed so much that his front blessed teeth became visible.”
The Style of the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) Smile
Hadith 26
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Jarir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Since I became a Muslim, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) never forbade me from coming to him; and whenever he saw me, he would smile.”
When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) smiled, his blessed teeth were visible
Hadith 27
“And Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Surely I know the person who will be the last to come out of Hellfire; he will be a man who will be dragged on his face out of Hell. He will be commanded: Go and enter Paradise. It is said that when he goes to enter Paradise, he will see that all the people have taken their places in their dwellings in Paradise. That person will return and say: O Lord! Everyone has occupied their places there. Then he will be asked: Do you remember the time in the world when you were there (how vast the world was)? He will say: Yes, O Lord! I remember that time. Then he will be told: Make a wish. So he will make a wish. Then he will be told: You have been given according to your wish and ten times more than the entire world. He will say: O Lord! Do You jest with me while You are the King of kings? Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said that when the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was narrating this about that person, he smiled until his blessed teeth became visible.”
The Unique Smile of Syedna Ali
Hadith 28
Muhaddith Albani has declared it authentic.
“And Ali ibn Rabi’ah, may Allah have mercy on him, said that I was present in the presence of Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, when a riding animal was brought for him so that he could mount it. When he placed his foot in the stirrup, he said Bismillah, and when he sat upright on the mount, he said Alhamdulillah. Then he recited this supplication: ‘Pure is He Who has made it subservient to us, for we could never have made it subservient; and indeed, to our Lord we shall return.’ Then he said Alhamdulillah three times, Allahu Akbar three times, and recited this prayer: ‘O Allah, You are Pure, I have wronged myself, forgive me; indeed, none forgives sins except You.’ Then Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, smiled. I asked: Commander of the Faithful! Why did you smile? He said: I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, do the same as I have done, and he also smiled. Then I asked: O Messenger of Allah, why did you smile? He said: Indeed, your Lord is pleased with His servant when he says: O my Lord, forgive my sins; none forgives sins except You.”
The Sound of Crying Coming from the Chest of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Hadith 29
Imam Hakim, Ibn Hibban, Ibn Khuzaymah, and Muhaddith Albani have declared it authentic.
“And Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Shakhir (may Allah be pleased with him) said that I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was praying, and the sound of crying came from his chest like the sound of a pot boiling.”
Lady Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) Crying Together and Then Laughing
Hadith 30
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that during the illness of death, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) called Sayyida Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) and spoke softly to her, upon which she began to cry. Then he spoke softly again, upon which she began to laugh. When we asked her about this, she explained that the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) told her that he would pass away from this illness, and hearing this, she began to cry. The second time, when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) whispered to her, he said that among the people of the Prophet’s household, I would be the first to join you, and this made her laugh.”
The Virtue of Crying out of Fear of Allah
Hadith 31
Muhaddith Albani has declared it authentic.
“And Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: One who weeps out of fear of Allah will not enter Hell until the milk returns to the udder (which is impossible), and the dust of Jihad and the smoke of Hell will never be gathered together.”
Hadith 32
Allama Ahmad Shakir has declared this narration authentic. Allama Nasiruddin Al-Albani (may Allah have mercy on him) states: This hadith is authentic; it mentions one bowing (ruku’), whereas the agreed-upon narrations mention more than one bowing. Therefore, despite its authentic chain, the narration mentioning only one bowing is considered rare.
“It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: During the blessed time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), one day there was a solar eclipse. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stood up and began the prayer. He stood for such a long time that it seemed as if he did not intend to bow. Then he bowed for such a long time that it seemed as if he did not intend to rise from it. Then he raised his blessed head and stood for such a long time that it seemed he would not go into prostration. Then he prostrated, and it seemed he would not lift his blessed head from the prostration. Then when he lifted his head from the prostration, he sat for such a long time that it seemed he would not perform the second prostration. Then he performed the second prostration, also for such a long time that it seemed he would lift his blessed head from it. During this time, he sighed and wept, saying: ‘O my Lord! Did You not promise me that You would not punish them while I am among them? O my Lord! Did You not promise that as long as they seek Your forgiveness, You would not punish them? And we seek Your forgiveness.’ When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) finished two rak’ahs, the sun had become bright again. He stood and praised Allah and said: ‘Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of the death or life of anyone. When they eclipse, hasten to remember Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.'”
The Virtue of Meeting with a Smile
Hadith 33
Al-Muhaddith Al-Albani has declared it “Sahih”.
“And Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah (RA) says that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: Every good deed is charity, and goodness also includes meeting your brother with a cheerful face and pouring water from your vessel into his vessel.”
When a Servant Repents, Allah is Pleased
Hadith 34
“And Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: Allah is more pleased with your repentance than a person who finds his lost mount and is happy.”
Warning Against Unlawful Laughing and Making Others Laugh
❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“And you laugh and do not weep.”
Hadith 35
Muhaddith Albani has classified it as Hasan.
“And Hazrat Muawiyah bin Haidah (may Allah be pleased with him) says, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: Destruction and ruin are for the person who says something that makes people laugh, while that statement is false; for such a person, there is nothing but destruction.”
Hadith 36
“And it is narrated from Abdullah bin Amr bin As (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) recited the words of Allah regarding Ibrahim (peace be upon him): ‘O my Lord! Indeed, they have led many astray, so whoever follows me is of me, and whoever disobeys me – indeed, You are Forgiving and Merciful.'”
And He recited the words of Isa (peace be upon him): ‘And if You punish them, indeed they are Your servants; and if You forgive them, indeed it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.'”
Then He raised His hands and supplicated: O Allah! My Ummah, my Ummah, and He wept. Then Allah commanded Jibril: O Jibril! Go to Muhammad (peace be upon him) and ask him (although Allah knows well) why are you weeping? So Jibril came to him and asked, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) told him his matter, and Allah knows best. Allah said: O Jibril! Go to Muhammad (peace be upon him) and tell him, We will give you glad tidings about your Ummah and will not cause you distress.”
Punishment for Lamenting in Islam
Hadith 37
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Malik Al-Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: If a woman who laments does not stop lamenting before death, then on the Day of Resurrection she will be made to stand wearing a coat of tar and an armor of itching.”
Laugh Less, Cry More
Hadith 38
Al-Muhaddith Al-Albani has classified it as Hasan.
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: I see what you do not see, and I hear what you do not hear. It grazes in the sky and it is its right to graze. There is no place for four fingers without (rather everywhere) some angel placing his forehead, prostrating to Allah. By Allah! If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep more, and you would not enjoy women on beds, and you would go out to the fields crying aloud to Allah. By Allah! I wish I were a tree that is cut down.”
Hadith 39
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه that after the passing of the Prophet Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم, Abu Bakr Siddiq رضي الله عنه said to Sayyiduna Umar رضي الله عنه: ‘Let us go to visit Sayyida Umm Ayman رضي الله عنها, as the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم used to visit her.’ So we went to her, and she was crying. They asked her: ‘Why are you crying? Do you not know that what is with Allah is better for the Messenger of Allah To this, Sayyida Umm Ayman رضي الله عنها replied: ‘I am not crying because I do not know this, but I am crying because the revelation from the heavens has ceased.’ This caused both of them to also cry, and they began to weep with her.”
Hadith 40
Muhaddith Albani has graded it as Hasan.
“And our master Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said that once the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) wept throughout the night and until morning he kept reciting in prayer this verse: If You punish them, indeed they are Your servants; and if You forgive them, indeed You are the Exalted in Might, the Wise.”
