Congregational Performance of Salat al-Kusuf (Solar Eclipse Prayer)
✍️ Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori
❖ Congregational Nature of the Prayer:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ performed Salat al-Kusuf in congregation, as is established through various authentic narrations.
📚 [Ḥujjat Allāh al-Bālighah: 2/20]
Even Imam al-Bukhārī رحمه الله established a chapter titled:
صلاة الكسوف جماعة
❝Salat al-Kusuf in congregation.❞
📖 [Bukhari: 1052, Book of Eclipse]
❖ Public Announcement for Congregation:
The Prophet ﷺ sent a caller to announce:
الصلاة جامعة
❝Everyone should gather for the prayer.❞
📚 [Bukhari: 1045, 1051; Muslim: 910; Abu Dawud: 1194; al-Nasā’ī: 3/136; Ahmad: 2/175; Ibn Khuzaymah: 1375; Sharḥ Maʿānī al-Āthār: 1/329; al-Bayhaqī: 3/324]
This clearly indicates that congregational performance is the preferred practice.
❖ Is It Obligatory?
The narration sometimes used to argue for obligation states:
إذا رأيتم ذلك فصلوها كأحدث صلاة صليتموها من المكتوبة
❝When you see it, pray it as you would pray the most recent of your obligatory prayers.❞
However, this narration is weak and not a reliable basis for making the prayer obligatory.

❖ Scholarly Consensus and Practice:
✔ The majority of scholars (Jumhūr) agree:
If the appointed Imam is not present, someone among the congregation may lead the prayer.
✔ ʿAllāmah ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Mubārakpūrī رحمه الله also holds this opinion.

❖ Summary:
✿ Salat al-Kusuf is best performed in congregation, following the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. Although not obligatory due to the weakness of narrations suggesting obligation, it is the superior and established practice. In the absence of an appointed Imam, one from among the worshippers may lead the prayer.
